The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has assured Nacala Logistics of its commitment to provide security support for the company's railway operations in Malawi.
Deputy Inspector General of Police responsible for Operations, Mr. Casper Chalera made the remarks during a stakeholders meeting between the two institutions in Lilongwe.
Chalera emphasized on the need for the two to maintain a good working relationship and incorporate local communities in their plans and operations.
He called for the drafting and signing of a fresh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two to serve as their guiding tool in curbing criminal incidents affecting the company's railway operations.
Representing Nacala Logistics, Mrs. Joyce Malongo cited encroachment into rail reserves, vandalism and theft of railway materials such as pandrol clips, steel sleepers, sign posts, and alignment bars as common incidents besides theft of general cargo from wagons and fuel from locomotives.
In 2016, MPS and Nacala Logistics signed an MoU which, according to both parties, was successfully implemented.
