The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has appealed to Malawians to also take part in protecting people with albinism.
The call was made on March 9, 2022 by the Deputy lnspector General of Police responsible for Administration, Mrs Merlyn Yolamu, at Liwonde Community ground in Machinga District.
Speaking to the gathering, the Deputy Inspector General emphasised that Malawians have a duty to ensure that people with albinism in their areas of jurisdiction are living peacefully.
"The laws of Malawi discourages discrimination, people with albinism deserve right to life like any other person hence the need to stop the attacks with immediate effect', said Yolamu.
Speaking at the same function, Machinga District Commissioner Rosemary Nawasha, commended MPS for organising the event.
Nawasha also encouraged Malawians and the gathered audience in particular, to take the message into action by stopping attacks on people with albinism. The DC also encouraged quick reporting of suspected perpetrators to Police for thorough investigation.
Speaking at the same function, APAM National Coordinator Maynard Zakaria, thanked MPS for playing a great and important role towards protecting People with albinism in Malawi.
"The recruitment of people with albinism into the police service, signifies the service's commitment towards enhancing our safety and security', alluded Zacharia.
The meeting was spiced up with a solidarity march led by the Police Band. There was also a football match between Blue Eagles Football Club and Liwonde Select.
