AGA - Africa partners Police in equipping investigative trainers

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police responsible for Administration, Mr Happy Mkandawire has officially opened the Criminal Investigative Trainers course on Monday, October 24, 2022 at Central Region Training Centre (CRTC) in Lilongwe. 

The week-long Trainer of Trainers (TOT) course comprising 26 participants drawn especially from Police Training Schools countrywide, is being sponsored by the Attorney General Alliance (AGA) Africa. 

Said DIG Mkandawire at the opening: "On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Mrs Merlyne Yolamu (PPM) , i urge you to grasp the knowledge and skills on this course which is a crucial step in investigative service delivery".

"We reviewed our training curriculum recently and the Service Training office did not manage to adequately orient all the trainers. We are lucky today that AGA- Africa has responded positively on TOT course in Criminal investigations", said DIG Mkandawire. 

He recognised that AGA-Africa has assembled a team of facilitators from various countries and encouraged the trainers to utilize that opportunity. 

In her address earlier, Miss Gift Chikwakwa, Country Director for AGA - Africa, noted that detectives play an important role in preventing, detecting and investigating crime; which helps in maintaining the rule of law, and protection of life and property. 

Said Chikwakwa: "The training will dwell on crime scene management, handling of physical and electronic evidence, case management and creating investigative reports, among other topics" . 

The Senior Police officers present at the opening session included Mr Dennis Banda, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and Regional Operations Officer for Central West Region, Dr Gift Chiundira who is the Service Training Officer (STRO), Senior Superintendent Prescott Mwayiulipo the Director of Legal Service, and Senior Superintendent Francis Mlanga the Commandant for CRTC. 

The International Facilitators are three namely; Dr Herbert Gustav Yankson from Ghana,  Melissa Pulver from the United States of America and  Masauso Kalililo from Zambia. 

On the other hand, the Local Facilitators are ; Limbikirani Mkandawire and Mercy Mazyopa, both Assistant Superintendents of Police, and Detective Inspector Ian Ngwenya. 

The Malawi Police Service and the AGA - Africa has also signed a memorandum of understanding  buttressing their collaboration. 

The AGA - Africa has worked with  various institutions on the continent so far including the   Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Judiciary.
