Police recover stolen vehicle, suspects arrested

Lilongwe Police Station on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 successfully intercepted a stolen motor vehicle registration number CA 5116 VW Polo, following a burglary and robbery at Mbwindi 2 location, along Likuni-NRC Road.

Police officers have also arrested three suspects in connection to the crime.

They have been identified as Gilbert Phiri, 24, (key suspect), Chrispin Kanjira,25, and Innocent Moses, 38, (receivers)

Court convicts 3 over vandalism of Escom apparatus in Lilongwe

The Senior Resident Magistrate court in Lilongwe has on Monday convicted three men for vandalizing four Spans, High Voltage oak line of 1200 metres long, of 100 millimeters each, worth K22.2 million belonging to Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).

The convicts have been identified as Michael Kambalame, 26, Umali Rashid, 35, both Area 36 residents and Chikafa Dzuwa, 41, a Chinsapo location resident.

Police arrest man behind fake Inspector General Facebook account

Police detectives from Cyber Crime Unit at National Police Headquarters have arrested 26 year-old Innocent Kananji on suspicion that he created a fake Facebook account bearing the name and photo of the Police Inspector General Meryln Yolamu. 

He was allegedly using the account to dupe unsuspecting youths of money amounting to K150,000 on the pretext that he would recruit them into the Malawi Police Service.

Police moves to secure evidence at scenes of crime

In a bid to eliminate dependence over circumstantial evidence, the Malawi Police Service through the Scenes of Crime Unit has initiated regional trainings to orient more scenes of crime officers starting from February 23, 2022.

Speaking during the opening ceremony in Zomba at Police College Officers Mess, the Deputy Commandant of Police College Senior Superintendent Senk Kalowekamo emphasized that professional management of scenes is crucial in gathering evidence for prosecution. 

7 nabbed over fake currency, police urges people to be careful

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) calls people to be on their guard against fraudsters who are producing and circulating fake currencies in the country.

The call follows the arrest of seven people in Mangochi and Lilongwe who were found with fake notes in Malawi Kwacha and United States Dollars plus equipment suspected to be used in the printing of the counterfeit currencies.

Fiscal Police nab fraudulent estate agents in Blantyre

The Fiscal Police in Blantyre have arrested two estate agents identified as Boyd Tchongwe,40, and McDonald Phiri,59, for fraud following a complaint from Saqib Ahmad whom they sold plots that do not exist in the city. 

According to Police findings,between March 2022 and January 2023, Mr. Ahmad, a businessman at Limbe, wanted to buy plots from Blantyre City Council in Chigumula and Mpingwe locations. 

He then approached Phiri who introduced him to Boyd Tchongwe as an official from Blantyre City Council. 

Ugandan bags 9-year jail term for illegal gun possession

Mwenyi Abdullah, a Ugandan national aged 44, has been sentenced by Mangochi Principal Resident Magistrate court sitting at Mulunguzi Court in Zomba to 9 years imprisonment and deportation for being found in possession of a firearm and ammunition without a permit and illegal entry into Malawi. 

 

State Prosecutor Superitendent Josephine Chigawa told the court that the convict was apprehended following a tip from workers of Sabble Farming Estate after being spotted loitering around the estate premises.  

 

MPS hails MACRA for digital forensic lab, PR training

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has hailed the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) for the digital forensic laboratory and training in Public Relations (PR) dubbed "Policing in the Digital Era".

 

The Inspector General, Mrs. Merlyne Yolamu, PPM, made the remarks on Monday, January 9, 2022 on the sidelines of Police Public Relations Officers (PRO's) training in Lilongwe.

 

Yolamu pledged to fully utilize the forensic laboratory that will enable law enforcers fight electronic money fraud, illegal migration and cyber security crimes.

MACRA to train Police PROs on digital communication

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has pledged to equip the Malawi Police Service with knowledge on the digital space to enable Public Relations Officers (PRO) become digitally engaged as communication technologies advance in Malawi.

 

The statement was made in Blantyre at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel on 5th January, 2023, during the official opening ceremony of a series of regional trainings themed "Policing in the digital era".

Road accidents decrease by 16 percent during Christmas in 2022

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) wishes to inform the public that road accidents recorded during this year's Christmas period have decreased by 16 percent when compared to similar accidents recorded in 2021 during the same period.

 

However, an analysis of the data on these accidents shows that the total number of people killed from the accidents in 2020 has increased by 10 percent.
