The newly built Victim Support Unit (VSU) and awareness campaign on Professional Standards Services have brought excitement and relief to the residents of Jali in Zomba.
Commissioner of Police for the Eastern Region, Mrs. Chikondi Chingadza, expressed confidence that the facility will help curb gender-based violence. She made the remarks on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Jali Trading Centre during a sensitization event.

“The Victim Support Unit was constructed by the Malawi Police Service with support from the EU under the Chilungamo II programme after recognizing the major challenges related to domestic violence. This office will provide assistance to women, girls, children, and men of all ages who suffer psychological, emotional, and physical abuse,” said Chingadza.
She further emphasized that the facility will empower survivors to speak out and encourage others to seek help.
“The VSU will support people who have been suffering in silence. Many victims never reported their cases or were unaware of this service. This campaign will ensure that people know the Malawi Police Service has this facility to assist them with issues affecting their lives,” she added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Kainja, who is also the Director of Community Policing, urged residents to utilize the services offered at the VSU.
“At the Victim Support Unit, we provide various services, including counseling, first aid, and referrals to institutions such as hospitals, courts, or any relevant organizations that can provide further assistance,” said Kainja.
Traditional Authority Mwambo, whose jurisdiction includes Jali, instructed his subordinates to encourage community members to embrace the initiative.
“I urge all chiefs in my area to work closely with their subordinates and the community to support the police in fighting crime and ending gender-based violence,” he said.
Apart from awareness on Victim Support Unit services, the masses were also sensitized on the existence of Proffesional Standards Services that are available at Regional level where citizens can lodge complaints against police actions.
