The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has reiterated its commitment to fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), a development that spurs women empowerment and development of the country.
Speaking in Lilongwe during the launch of media training on 'SGBV Survivor Centred Reporting,' Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dennis Chipao who made the remarks on behalf of the Inspector General Dr. George Kainja, emphasised that the fight against SGBVs is a consented effort.
Chipao therefore hailed the strategies and coordination that exist between the Police and other key stakeholders in ending SGBVs in the country.
He, however, downplayed sensational reporting and social media abuse on SGBVs which fuel public humiliation and violation of human rights towards the survivors.
Chipao therefore challenged publication of success stories about the Malawi women if the country is to achieve gender equality and national development.
The Police Commissioner therefore hailed the media training as it will mark a 'new chapter' in targeting the survivors and success stories reported by the media and the Police PROs.
The training comes as the World, and Malawi in particular, is celebrating the International Women's Day which started with solidarity march by the Police brass band from Parliament Building to BICC where speeches were made by influential women in the society including the Gender Minister, Hon. Dr. Patricia Kaliat.
This year's celebrations were held under the theme: 'Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.'
